WIP mini blog hop

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Monday, November 12, 2012, In : MEME

I was tagged by my friend and critique partner Lianne Simon who is the fantastic author behind Confessions of a Teenage Hermaphrodite.

What is your working title of your book?
Butterfly with Broken Wings.

Where did the idea come from for the book?
I was faced with my own chronic illnesses, including Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, and the lives of many others, especially children who were bedbound and had lost their school friends. Children find it hard to visit their friend in bed when they are used ...

A much longer even more overdue update

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Thursday, August 9, 2012, In : update

I have finished the final year of the Creative Writing part of my degree and been awarded another first (distinction). So I am delighted. I have time off until next February now, when I will resume my degree with year two Spanish.

In the meantime, I am preparing draft four of Butterfly with Broken Wings and enjoying it just as much as ever.

I am also really excited because my author friend Susan Dennard’s first book is finally released by Harper Teen. I can’t believe I will actually read ...

A lot of things have happened over the last few months

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Saturday, August 6, 2011, In : update

First of all, I managed to finish my year two creative writing course with the Open University, which I managed to get a distinction (a 1st) in. I am delighted with this result, and I will begin year three of the course in October.

I am 60000 words into draft three of Butterfly with Broken Wings and am still very much enjoying the process. I am also turning over ideas for a young-adult dystopian series, which I plan to write next.

Also despite a few blips, my health seems to be going forward m...

Much overdue update

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Tuesday, February 1, 2011,

A quick update for everyone: I have been so busy and haven’t had a chance lately. First of all, I handed in my second university assignment for my creative writing, which was a short story like the first assignment. I got distinctions (above 85%) in both, which makes me very happy. I am now working on the poetry assignment, which is due in in a couple of weeks. I also officially start my university Spanish course in a couple of days.

I am working on draft three of Butterfly with Broken Wing...

A few of the things I have learnt over the last 8 months...

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Thursday, July 1, 2010, In : writing tips

First of all, as I new writer I have been amazed at how much my work has improved over the last 8 months. I put that down to doing lots of workshops, reading around the subject, critiquing and being critiqued, and reading in the genre I am writing.

Books I have found useful:
(This is by no means an exhaustive list!)

  • Self Editing for fiction writers by Rennie Brown and Dave King is a must for anybody learning about editing their own work. The advice in there is necessary to be learnt.

Huge health improvement

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Monday, June 14, 2010, In : Me

This is a generic update I am sending to a few people and posting on a few blogs :) I have been mostly bed-bound for 18 months. I have M.E. and Crohn's Disease (ulcers in your intestines)  amongst other illnesses. I also have had as of yet undiagnosed seizure-type episodes for 13 months - waiting for MRI results. I also suspect I have narcolepsy and as I have all the symptoms and have done for some 10 years, but this could be coincidence with all the other things my body is fighting. I should...

Writing Update

I have been a busy bee these past few days. During two workshops, I wrote my synopsis and query letter for Butterfly With Broken Wings, despite it being still in the revision stage. I want to say a huge thank you to fellow Savvy Authors members Susan Dennard and Katharina Gerlach (amongst others) who helped with my synopsis during the workshop and to Susan who helped with my query during the second workshop.

The second draft is coming along fantastically. I am forever making litt...

May 12 is ME/CFS Awareness Day

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, In : ME/CFS

I wrote this entry on May the 1st 2009, in response to Blogging Against Disablism Day. I wanted to raise awareness of what it is like to have ME or an invisible disability. I have included it here to help you learn more about ME, my story, and  why it is important to raise awareness this ME awareness week May 11th-17th.

Unfortunately, I relapsed not long after writing this and have been cycling between bed-bound and mostly house-bound since, although I have been improving lately. I also have d...

The Importance of Grammar

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, In : writing tips

When writing a synopsis recently, I was advised by a very helpful fellow writer in my workshop to improve my grammar. Given I wasn’t really taught any grammar at school, I have been trying to improve my grammar recently, and been fairly successful so far. However, my commas needed work, and this lady recommended an excellent blog where grammar, particularly clauses and comma placement have been discussed in more detail.

Grammar is ESSENTIAL. No writer can avoid perfecting this technique and ...

Competition by author Steph Bowe

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Saturday, April 24, 2010, In : competitions

Steph Bowe is a sixteen year old young adult author, whose debut novel Girl Saves Boy, which I can’t wait to read, is due out in September 2010 in Australia and New Zealand, and in America in 2011.

Steph is holding a fantastic competition on her blog, Hey Teenager of the Year to celebrate its one year anniversary. I have been following her for a while now; her posts are amazing, she is very talented, and her views are powerful and open, and she is willing to tackle difficult or taboo...

Let's Help Each Other!

Posted by Laura Ann Dunks on Monday, April 19, 2010,

"We're here for a reason. I believe a bit of the reason is to throw little torches out to lead people through the dark." - Whoopi Goldberg

Anybody wanting to become a published author will know how hard it is. You need to plan and write a manuscript, revise and polish it, and think about a synopsis, pitch, query letters, agents, publishers, editors, and self promotion, amongst everything else. Writing is not just a craft, it is a business, and I hope to share information and inspiration I ...
